It's starting to get very autumnal out there, which makes for great walking. The leaves are really starting to turn now, from green to red and gold. Kicking up leaves on the ground searching for conkers and the first sweet chestnuts of autumn.

October is now officially underway. It's probably the month most associated with autumn, and also apples, especially here in the West Country. Somerset has a wealth of vintage cider farms, and cider has been part of the story of the West Country since time immemorial. For how long our ancestors have been fermenting apples is uncertain. But when Julius Caesar attempted to invade in 55 BC, the Romans found the local Celts fermenting apples.

The first apple harvests are already underway here in the South West, and the local cider farms are now busy picking and pressing these iconic fruits, creating delicious apple juice, cider and brandy for the year ahead.
