Autumn (fall) draws in from September to late November. This seasonal change is glorious. September brings seasonal mists to the valley floors. Mid to end of October the trees transform with their burnt oranges, reds and yellows.
All of which makes September and October wonderful months to walk in southwest England. But with the weather also becoming more changeable, it can be a challenge to know what to wear. While the weather in the south is generally milder and more stable than in the north, it still pays to be prepared for sudden shifts in weather: sunshine, showers, wind and frost are all possible from September to November in South West England. Here are our recommendations for essential autumn hiking kit:
- The most important bit of kit for any hike is footwear. For autumn, we recommend wearing a sturdy pair of waterproof hiking boots, a good pair of hiking socks and a pair of gaiters (a protective sleeve that fits over your shoes and lower legs). Whether you’re hiking across Exmoor, on the coast path or in the heart of the golden Cotswolds, a good pair of boots, socks and gaiters will provide support, grip and will keep your feet and trousers dry whatever the weather.
- Layers! Dress in several thin layers for Autumn walking. English autumn weather can vary enormously from warm and sunny to cool and cloudy, breezy or rainy. Be prepared for multiple weathers, sometimes during the same day by having a waterproof, warm fleece, sun hat and sun cream with you. You can more easily adjust a thin layer or two to be warmer or cooler.
- At Foot Trails, we transfer all of your luggage so you only need to carry a daypack. Each day, you’ll be guided by our step-by-step instructions in your Trail Guides and your route will also be highlighted on the OS Maps provided in your Walk & Explore Box. In addition to these, we also recommend that you bring the following for each day’s hike:
- A phone for emergencies (and for taking photos!) along with relevant contact numbers for emergencies.
- Enough water for the day (1.5 to 2L) and some snacks. It’s a misconception to think you need to drink less in autumn than at other times of the year. Although the weather is cooler in autumn, it can still be surprisingly warm, especially in September and October.
- An extra waterproof bag if you are carrying any valuables that need to be kept dry.
- A first aid kit with basics for treating blisters, headaches and other minor ailments.
- Sunscreen and a sun hat (or a warm hat and gloves) – the weather can change quickly in autumn, so be sure to check the weather forecast for the whole day.
With the right preparation and kit, there’s nothing to stop you enjoying wonderful hikes in England in this wonderful season of ‘mists and mellow fruitfulness’!
