Finding stillness in nature

A Foot Trails hike is never just about getting from A to B. We craft our routes to show you the countryside we’ve explored our whole lives, the hidden gems, quiet vistas, and peaceful moments that make walking so special.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing a few of our favorite moments from our trails. Our first moment starts in the crisp depths of winter.

Foot Trails Co-Founder Alison walks along the edge of a frosty field at dawn with the first signs of the sunrise showing to the left.

“We set off at first light with a crisp frost on the ground. Dressed warmly in hats, gloves and winter coats we began the ascent up the Wiltshire hills. Light grew all the time with every step and mist hovered in the river valley below us. We arrived at the top of the hill, just as the sun peaked tantalisingly over the horizon. A great orange ball, flooding our view with bright golden winter sunlight.

I love walking in winter on days like these. Winter brings a fragile, peaceful beauty that is inspiring to see and experience. The landscape was oh so still and quiet. As we began our descent we passed sheep grazing on the hillside, views of the valley below. It was a perfect winter’s walk.”
