At the end of February, David and I donned our walking boots and headed for Exmoor, a national park that spans the counties of both Somerset and Devon.
It’s well known for being a truly wild corner of South West England yet is only 4 hours from London. With its moors, woodland coast and streams, it is picturesque, quiet and peaceful. It was also designated the first International Dark Skies Reserve in Europe.
Our walks took us across the moors where the earthy textures and colours of browns and greens were vivid even at this time of year.

We jumped streams and crossed rivers on wooden bridges, admiring moss-covered trees and enjoyed far-reaching views.

What struck me was the quiet. A gorgeous peace in the countryside with no traffic at all. In the morning, we would throw open the window at our country inn and enjoy the sounds of the dawn chorus and the pheasants.
There are plenty of stunning views to enjoy. And for this reason a good level of fitness is required for walking and hiking this area as there are a few steep ups in every trail.

We also explored the coast at Porlock Weir. A beautiful spot where a harbour has existed for thousands of years. It’s always so lovely to be by the sea.

We ate some delicious food on our walking trip all at the country inns we have handpicked. The beef steak, farmed nearby stands out along with the tasty Exmoor honey, amazing handmade desserts and wonderful breakfasts which set us up for the day on the trail.

The best way to find out more about walking in Exmoor is to request a copy of Foot Trails’ stunning digital brochure called Wild Coast and Wild Moor. It’s packed full of beautiful photography and this trip is new for 2025. If you love nature and beautiful wild landscapes you’ll really enjoy Exmoor.
