Stepping through time in Wiltshire... Earlier thi Stepping through time in Wiltshire... Earlier this week, David, Alastair and myself (Emma) from the Foot Trails team were out in wonderful Wiltshire, updating a walk steeped in history. Starting deep in the countryside, our trail took us through woodlands and over rivers, meadows and fields. Taking in an ancient Iron Age hillfort occupied well into the Middle Ages before being abandoned in the 1300s. After spending some time exploring the ruins, we continued on our way. The spire of Salisbury emerging in the thinning mist, dominating the skyline as it has done since the 14th century. We followed our route into the city, keeping to the course of the river until we reached the cathedral square, where a welcoming bowl of warm soup and a hot drink were waiting for us. This trail is part of our Kings & Kingdoms hiking trip. Walking in the footsteps of England’s ancient king Walking in the footsteps of England’s ancient kings… English history is a treasure trove of stories & legends. Nowhere is this felt more strongly than in Wiltshire, Dorset & Somerset. These three English counties were at the heart of the ancient Kingdom of the West Saxons (Wessex). It’s a region where King Arthur is rumoured to have roamed, where Alfred the Great once ruled, and where Alfred’s descendent, Athelstan became the first ‘King of the English (AD 924). It’s also the place where Foot Trails was born. David and I spent a decade here hiking and exploring here, and we couldn’t believe that this rural idyll was being overlooked as a destination. Wonderfully crowd-free, you can enjoy a wide variety of landscapes over just a few days. Not forgetting some of the most charming villages in South West England (it’s home, we’re biased!). It was the perfect winter morning as I stood in The Cotswolds at daybreak… One of the privileges of researching and creating new walks is that it gets me (David) out and about in all seasons and weathers. Last weekend, I was in the Cotswolds putting the finishing touches on a new walk along the river Coln. Beautiful old churches, thatched cottages, a Roman Road and ancient clapper bridges were just a few of the highlights on this tranquil walk. It was the perfect winter day in South West Englan It was the perfect winter day in South West England for a hike. Dry, bright and cold. Wrapped warmly against the keen wind and elements in cosy hats, scarves, gloves and thermal layers, David and I (Alison) set out on our 8 mile Foot Trail from Lyme Regis in Dorset on 30 December. We were crafting a brand new trail for our new 2026 'Coastal Seascapes of Dorset' adventure. Babbling streams, coastal cottages, clifftop views and fossils. Nestled on the Jurassic Coast (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Lyme Regis boasts extraordinary natural history as well as dramatic coastal scenery, and a rich cultural legacy.
