Going on a hiking adventure to England and wondering what to pack Foot Trails Co-Founder Alison Howell shares her experience and top 10 tips on what to bring with you.
1) Comfortable and waterproof walking or hiking boots
With a wide choice of leather and Gore-Tech boots available, the key is finding a pair that is waterproof, fits well and is comfortable for you. Our top tip is to wear your boots during your flight to keep weight down in your suitcase.
2) A day pack
If your holiday includes luggage transfers, you’ll still need a day rucksack to carry all the items you’ll need on the trail each day. A waterproof liner for your rucksack is a must in case of rain showers or bring a waterproof bag to contain your phone and precious items.
3) Layers of clothing
Layers of clothing are vital for walking in our English island climate. We can experience many different types of weather all in the same day! It’s useful to be able to peel off or add layers according to conditions. A warm fleece is a must year-round. We recommend long trousers or pants to avoid scratches from plants or stings from stinging nettles (a wild plant which can grow tall in the summer).
4) A water bottle
You’ll want to stay hydrated so carrying enough water for the entire morning or afternoon is important.
5) A hat
This might be a sun hat in warmer temperatures or a warmer wool hat or cap in cooler conditions.
6) A camera
This might be on your phone, but you’ll want to capture memories and beautiful scenes as you hike!
7) Suncream
The sun can shine warmly, even in Britain (we’ve recently had temperatures around 70 degrees F in April) and suncream will also protect you from UV rays,
8) Comfortable walking socks
Hand in hand with a good pair of waterproof boots, comfortable hiking or walking socks will wick moisture away from your feet keeping them cool and dry.
9) A waterproof
A robust waterproof coat is a must for England at all times of the year. We can experience a short rain shower even on an otherwise sunny day! Look for taped seams and a breathable material if possible for maximum comfort.
10) A pair of gaiters
Gaiters are a bit like waterproof legwarmers that come up to your knee and attach to the front of your hiking boots. They are fantastic in England, even in spring and summer, when long grass can trap wet dew. Gaiters will keep your legs dry.
