We followed the winding river and found ourselves deep in Exmoor’s remote natural beauty. Exmoor: You may not have heard of it, but it’s well worth considering for your next hiking adventure.
Exmoor is located in South West England, spanning the counties of Somerset and North Devon. Much quieter in the summer than the more popular Dorset Coast, it’s perfect for peaceful adventures, calm moments, stillness, and wild, natural beauty.
When recalling our walks and hikes here, the tranquility and peace are what immediately come to mind. Exmoor has a rugged landscape defined by its coast and moorland areas. On the moor, the heather flowers from late July creating a spectacular and pretty carpet of purple. At other times of the year, the moor is full of rust and brown colours.
If you are lucky you might spot a wild Exmoor pony, grazing in family groups. Red deer live in the National Park and if you look up, you might see a buzzard or peregrine falcon circling above.
The moor contrasts beautifully with the high sea cliffs as they fall away and dip into the Bristol Channel. Here salty sea spray fills the air, and the colours are a swirl of many shades of gray and blue. On the coast you might spot a curlew or oyster catcher.
After a day exploring its wild landscapes you can return to the wonderfully cosy retreat of our handpicked country inns. A soothing hot shower or bath awaits followed by a delicious dinner. Exmoor is a dark skies nature reserve, so after dinner step outside on a clear night to enjoy the magical sight of stars above you.
